This new body of work is a risk.
The focus of my Black work for over 24 years has centred on
1. The act of painting and
2. Most importantly on the act of seeing - how we see - how we experience - how we feel.
“-impacted” is still embedded in this philosophy.
The focus of “-impacted” has been on addressing brain damage; which has informed both the work and the process. Brain damage is profoundly disruptive; what was certain in life can no longer be taken for granted. Brain dysfunction has significantly impacted my life and those who are very close to me. It is cited that one in five people manage life with a brain issue, possibly more, as so many go unseen.
Now in this new body of work the paint becomes a symbol, an act of disruption and damage, thus addressing the tough reality and disruption quietly endured by so many. So much is not seen;
-
the pain not seen,
-
the loss not seen,
-
the isolation not seen.
A risky work for a raw reality.
